Southwark’s Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA) for Children & Young People with Special Educational Needs & Disabilities can be downloaded here (pdf, 1.3mb).

Its purpose is to identify the current and future health and wellbeing needs of our local population.

In 2018 the government committed £215 million of capital funding to help local authorities create new school places and improve existing services for children and young people with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities).  The total allocation for Southwark was £2,799,253 for the 3 year period from 2018-19 to 2020-21.

Local authorities were required to complete and publish a short plan that set out how they intended to invest their allocation and to make this visible.  Our strategy identified priorities for developing SEND educational provision for young people to keep pace with demand, share best practice and expand opportunities so that high quality provision would be locally available to all Southwark young people and families that needed it.

We consulted with parents/carers, young people, education providers and other groups.  There continues to be strong support for the priorities identified for development.  To ensure that these strategic priorities were delivered in a practical manner and met local needs, individual schools and education settings have been encouraged to apply for capital funding to increase their capacity to provide for the needs of their communities.

In April 2021 the government announced further funding of £280 million (Southwark's allocation was £1,306,336) SEND capital funding and the Southwark SEND education provision strategy 2018- 2020 was reviewed in line with government guidance.  The reviewed policy has been incorporated into the new Southwark SEND strategy.  Consultations on the new strategy with all stakeholders are on-going.
